Preparing for Surgery

Before Surgery

  • Fast (NPO) after midnight the night before your scheduled surgery

  • Adjust or temporarily stop certain medications as instructed by your provider

  • Complete medical clearance upon request

  • Arrange transportation

  • Notify our office of any questions or concerns you may have before proceeding

Understanding Your Surgery Arrival Time

  • Arrival time is pre-op preparation time, not surgery time

  • Includes labs, IV placement, anesthesia evaluation, and safety checks

  • Kidney patients often require additional preparation for safety

Important to Know

  • Surgery start times may be changed based on medical needs

  • Early arrival helps prevent delays and same-day cancellations

  • If you are diabetic: bring necessary equipment (ex: sugar pills, medications, etc.)

  • Due to the medical complexity of advanced chronic kidney disease, extended pre-operative preparation and waiting times may be necessary.

  • These measures are part of our office’s safety protocol, designed to ensure the safest possible surgery. If this is not feasible for you, please contact our office prior to your surgery date to discuss alternative options.

Our care team will provide specific instructions for each patient. This is a list of general guidelines to reduce the risk of complications.
